How Social Media Algorithms Really Work (Platform by Platform)

How Social Media Algorithms Really Work (Platform by Platform)

Each platform plays by its own rules, but all share the same objective: keeping you engaged in-app as much as possible.

Instagram

  • If you engage with cooking content, you will see more of it in the explore tab.

  • Posts from people you frequently interact with will show up first. However, each part of the app: feed, explore, reels has its own ranking system, based on how you interact with it.

  • Across Instagram, the algorithm relies on ‘signals’ based on how you interact with the app and how other people interact with you.

  • The way you engage with other businesses and followers tells the platform whose posts you’d like to see.

TikTok uses signals, which are inputs and data that add up to a big picture of your interests. These signals are made up of several components, including the videos you like, the accounts you interact with most (by leaving comments or sharing), and the videos you skip.

  • Watch Time:

The longer people watch, the better the ranking.

  • “For You” Feed:

Since it’s tailored by interests, every user’s feed will look different. If you love plants, floral arrangements, and similar content, the For You feed will deliver those topics.

  • Replays & Shares:

If people rewatch or share, the algorithm assumes it’s engaging.

  • Hashtags & Sounds:

Trending audio and relevant hashtags give your video an extra push.

Meta Algorithm

Because most people have more content in their feed than they can possibly browse in one session, Meta uses ranking systems to help ensure they see the content most valuable to them.

Every time you open Facebook, the algorithm goes through a set of 4 steps:

  1. Inventory: What content has been posted by friends and publishers?

  2. Signals: Who posted this story?

  3. Predictions: How likely are you to engage with this post?

  4. Score: How interested will people be in this post?

Youtube Algorithm

  • YouTube Homepage

YouTube gathers signals from the way you use its platform, like what you’ve watched previously, how long you’re watching for, and what types of content you particularly enjoy.

  • Suggested Videos:

YouTube wants to tempt you to click on the next video and keep you on the platform as long as possible. That means serving you more of the videos it knows you’ll love!

  • Search Result:

YouTube combs through each and every video to find text that can give it clues, including titles, descriptions, tags, and chapters. Even subtitles generated from the content can help give YouTube a clearer picture of what a video is about!

  • YouTube Shorts:

YouTube Shorts takes information from users' watch history, taking note of the content they’ve interacted with and the channels they follow. It’ll even factor in the types of content watched by similar viewers!

Pinterest Algorithm

Pinterest factors Old pins to show you while you are offline, using data about your last active session. When you are online, Pinterest tracks your activity, and if a new pin is uploaded that might interest you, it shows it to keep you engaged.
