The Pros and Cons of Using ChatGPT for SEO

The Pros and Cons of Using ChatGPT for SEO

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot designed to engage in human-like conversations. It uses natural language processing to understand and generate text, making it useful for answering questions, writing different types of content, and assisting with various tasks.

It’s a useful tool for everyone. If you’re a novice, you can use ChatGPT to help write things like website content or short descriptions quickly and easily. If you know more about SEO, you can use it to study search results and plan detailed ideas for your articles or pages to get better rankings on Google.

Let’s take a look at some of the pros of using ChatGPT for SEO.

ChatGPT is a great tool to help you create title tags and meta descriptions quickly and effectively.

Just tell ChatGPT exactly what you want.

For example:

“Create 10 SEO-friendly title tags with the keyword ‘best running shoes’, not longer then 60 characters.”

ChatGPT will give you a list of title tags to choose from.

Pick the title that fits your article best.

You can do the same to create meta descriptions:

“Write 20 unique meta descriptions using the keyword ‘best running shoes’, each under 160 characters.”

Here it goes:

Now you might think, “Hmm, this is a great tool—I should use it to generate keywords too.”

So, you’d write to ChatGPT something like:

“Give me a list of 10 SEO keywords that I could target for my running shoes website.”  and it will:

Sounds simple, right? But here’s the catch—and this is one of the cons of using ChatGPT for SEO: while it can suggest relevant keyword ideas, it doesn’t provide accurate or real-time search volume data.

That means you get good keyword suggestions, but you won’t know how popular or competitive those keywords actually are.

For example, ChatGPT has a volume for "best running shoes" at 40,000 monthly searches, but if you check SEMrush, it's 60,500. Similarly, for "running shoes for men", ChatGPT gives an estimate of 20,000, while SEMrush reports 22,200.

These discrepancies occur because different tools use different data sources and update frequencies.

The main takeaway here is that ChatGPT is a great tool to generate keyword ideas quickly and get a rough sense of search demand, but it’s not a replacement for specialized SEO tools. To find the best keywords to actually target, you should rely on dedicated platforms like SEMrush, Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, or Moz.

These tools provide more accurate, up-to-date search volumes, competition data, and additional insights such as keyword trends and CPC (cost per click).

Using ChatGPT to brainstorm keywords can save time in the early stages, helping you build an initial list. Then, plugging those keywords into SEO tools will refine your strategy and help you focus on terms with the best balance of traffic potential and ranking difficulty.

Combining both approaches allows you to be efficient while making data-driven decisions that boost your website’s visibility and sales.

Other Ways ChatGPT Can Help with SEO

ChatGPT is not just useful for keywords and meta tags. It can also help you with many other SEO tasks, such as:

  • Content ideas: If you’re stuck on what to write about, ChatGPT can give you lots of blog post ideas or even help create an outline for your article.

  • FAQ creation: You can ask ChatGPT to make questions and answers about your topic. These can be used for FAQ sections that help your site show up in Google’s featured snippets.

  • Content rewriting: ChatGPT can help make your writing easier to read or change the style so it fits different readers better.

  • Internal linking suggestions: It can suggest related topics or pages on your website that you should link to, which helps Google understand your site better and improves user experience.

While ChatGPT is a powerful tool to speed up your SEO work, it’s important to use it wisely to get the best results.

Here are some actionable tips to make the most out of ChatGPT for your SEO efforts:

  • Always fact-check and validate AI-generated content.

ChatGPT can sometimes produce outdated or incorrect information. Before publishing, verify facts, statistics, and any claims with reliable sources to maintain your website’s credibility and trustworthiness.

  • Use ChatGPT as a starting point rather than the final product.

Treat AI-generated content, keywords, or meta tags as drafts or ideas. Edit, expand, and personalize the output to better match your brand voice, target audience, and SEO goals.

  • Combine AI output with your own expertise and data insights.

Don’t rely solely on ChatGPT. Use your knowledge of the market, audience behavior, and SEO analytics tools to refine and optimize your strategy. This combination will lead to stronger, more effective content and targeting.

  • Update prompts carefully to get the most relevant and useful outputs.

The quality of results depends heavily on how you phrase your prompts. Be specific and clear in your instructions to ChatGPT. Experiment with different wording or add context to get outputs that better fit your needs.
